Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a validated psychotherapy treatment used to alleviate the symptoms and emotional distress caused by trauma and disturbing life experiences, such as PTSD, depression, anxiety and panic disorders. EMDR therapy relies on bilateral brain stimulation to sort and process disturbing memories and emotions allowing for the brains natural healing process.

EMDR therapy differs from a normal therapy. Unlike “talk therapy” which is where a client talks through stressful or uncomfortable memories and emotions, EMDR therapy connects the neural pathways between the hippocampus (which assists with learning, including memories about safety and danger), the amygdala (the alarm signal for stressful events), and the prefrontal cortex (which analyzes and controls behavior and emotion). EMDR mimics what happens in Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep to connect these sections of the brain allowing one to process intense emotions and become unstuck from them.
